Köttum til varnar (In Defense of Cats) was published by JPV (Forlagið) in 2010 and sold to support Kattholt, a local cat shelter. The book has long been sold out, but given that the issue of free-ranging cats remains a hot topic in Iceland, I decided to make it available here on my website for free. More information about the creation of the work can be found in the book's introduction.
Original cover text:
The position of the pet in urban society has long been unclear. It lives in a gray area between being a wild animal, a domestic animal and a family member. Any discussion about pets and regulations related to them will therefore become both complicated and unclear. This publication is intended as a contribution to that discussion.
The main basis of the book is a short story in dialogue form by Gunnar Theodór Eggertsson. In addition, there are five short writings about Icelandic cats by Haruki Murakami, Jónas Jónasson, Páll Halldórsson and Þorsteinn Erlingsson.
All proceeds go directly to Kattholt.
"This book is a fine contribution to conversations about cats and humans ... an idealistic book."
